When you think of small towns, you may conjure up images of Mayberry, Sheriff Andy and his lovable deputy Barney Fife, and a sleepy, yet serene, downtown. Mayberry may be fictional, but the township comradery it favors is not. And Opelika is among the best small southern towns, according to popular lifestyle magazine Southern Living.
A City with Southern Charm
Cities with Southern charm are not of a bygone era, as this list attests. Southern Living decided that Opelika is among the best small southern towns because of its “spirited” southern charm. Quite literally, in fact.
In its blurb, the southern lifestyle digest specifically cited Opelika’s John Emerald Distilling Company, which boasted the first legal Alabama whiskey since Prohibition. Southern Living also named two staples of the craft brewing scene, Red Clay Brewing Co. and Resting Pulse Brewing Co.
But the magazine’s take on Opelika’s spirit included more meaning than that. The periodical also touted Opelika’s vibrant social culture, recognizing Railroad Avenue’s entertainment district as well as local hotspots Ampersand Wine Bar and Eighth & Rail.
Signatures of the South
While Opelika is among the best small southern towns, two other Alabama townships also made the list: Florence and Fairhope. Opelika ranked 16; edging out Florence at 17–while Fairhope capped the list at number three. Williamsburg, Virginia, took the top spot. All in all, Southern Living named 20 towns to its “The South’s Best Small Towns 2020” list.
Living in Opelika, it’s not much of a surprise to us that Opelika is among the best small southern towns. We have small town comradery, with big city conveniences. And that’s just fine by us.
Southern living is serene, especially in Auburn’s sister city of Opelika. Looking for a tight-knit community you can trust and live life with? Consider living with us at Tree Tops! You can catch a glimpse of what life is like on our website. Plus, follow our blog to keep being in the know!
